Why These Rainbows Are Different

Some suncatchers use hard acrylic or traditional glass that produces a soft, blurry effect. Every SunRain prism suncatcher is crafted from only 30% lead crystal by Asfour Crystal—the same material found in fine chandeliers. Glass is made from sand. Crystal is a finely crafted mix of Silica sand with Potash and Lead (II) Oxide (ref. www.theglassmakers.co.uk).

Lead crystal bends light more sharply, splitting sunlight into distinct, saturated bands of red, orange, yellow, green, "blue", indigo and violet. I put "blue" in quotes because I have seen light blue, cyan, and some remarkable blue hues. Each 2-inch prism features 16 precision machine-cut facets, giving you 400 light-splitting surfaces and room-filling color that can reach walls in shadow 30 feet away and more with vivid strength (ref. pressbooks.online.ucf.edu).

The Art & Engineering of Light

I took the long way around to get here. I'm John Meng-Frecker, a retired engineer turned working artist. My SunRain design comes from prism geometry: the 360° circle perfectly holds 25 lead crystal chandelier prisms, forming a sunburst pattern.

I first made SunRain for my granddaughter. When she saw the rainbows dancing across her bedroom, she said, "There's rainbows everywhere!" That reaction is what I hope every customer experiences.
